write your own pele song

Obviously it takes raw talent to write quality Pele-like songs but with the help of this guide you can get a step closer to re-creating that Pele 'vibe' in your own songs. It's so easy, and the results are spectacular!

Step one - choose the topic of your song
The song should be about one of the following topics: (1) Ale (2) The Monarchy (3)America (4) Religious leaders (5) Red wine (6) Twisted, shameless pop stars (7)Your girlfriend/her other boyfriends

Step two - write the lyrics
Preferably witty and gritty, they should begin by focusing on the chosen topic but by the end of the song it's fine if all you're singing about is fine ales and red wines. Also, include a couple of place names (see step 8 for more details).

Step three - choose a chord sequence
Select one from: E/A/B, G/C/F/C, D/G/A, Bb/F/Eb/F or C/F.

Step four - compose the violin riff
This should be folky, poppy and fit nicely over the chord sequence chosen in step 3.

Step five - record the instruments
The drums should of course be a bit too jolly and upbeat for their own good ("Hit them like you hate them!" - Dally's advice). Don't forget generous helpings of happy hammond and perky piano to fill those chorus's out! (And no more than 3 and a half minutes in total!)

Step six - record the vocals
The main (male) vocals should over emphasise as many words as possible (eg don't sing 'rum', sing 'ru-hu-hu-hu-m' instead). Then get a female friend to sing backing vocals; this involves adding harmonies, "oooooh"s and echos (as in the vain of 'Hayley Please')

Step seven - ad-libs
VITALLY IMPORTANT. On a separate tape track record a 'spontaneous shouting' track. Great fun can be had doing this, especially if one 'gets into character' and leaps around the room (me and Big Jon are experts at this.) You should shout one of the following every ten seconds AT LEAST: "Yeeeeah!", "All souls!", "Whoop!", "Listen up!", "Everybody!" and "Al' right".

Step eight - perform
After (not too many) practices (you need to retain that raw 'live' feel) perform your song in front of some willing listeners - drunken students are excellent fodder. Ensure that you leave plenty of gaps when singing the songs for audience participation and of course you can DOUBLE the number of 'ad-libs' you use. Most importantly, remember to change the place names mentioned in your song to the place where you are performing: eg change "I'll head for Rome" to "I'll head for the East Midlands and Loughborough University." As long as there are roughly the same number of syllables, it'll work...just ask Ian!
